Seeds of subject-matter – mixed media drawing
Walking in rural settings has long been inspirational for artists, poets and composers. Following in this tradition, Linda Ingham will lead a 2-day workshop which includes a walking session along the River Ancholme and through part of Brigg, with a view to collecting inspiration and matter to inform one or more drawn studies.
On day 1, weather permitting, the group will spend approximately 1 – 2 hours in the local landscape with Linda, who will guide and support participants in drawing, note-making and observation; collection of items – perhaps foliage or small natural objects – may also be encouraged. Linda will bring paintings, drawings, images and objects to present to the group, and demonstrate a series of mixed media techniques which all will have the opportunity to try. This will be an inspiring session during which all will be encouraged to develop their own ideas and directions.
Day 2: Begins with a short presentation and recap on techniques, before moving ahead with the development of a study or series of studies.
There will be the option to reconvene at a later date.
This two-day workshop is suitable for intermediate and advanced practitioners, as well as those new to art who are interested in ‘having a go’! As the focus will be on the development of subject-matter and mixed-media techniques, the content is also suitable for textile artists and those whose practice is in other artforms as well as individuals who would like to try something new.
Bring with you: Small drawing pad and notebook; your camera or mobile phone; your usual drawing or painting materials, or a pencil or pen. If you have images or objects that relate through to a particular place you’d like to explore through mixed media drawing, do bring those also. Additional mixed media resources will be available to try on the day, and a small range of materials available for purchase at cost price.
Linda Ingham is a visual artist and curator whose practice considers subjects related to landscape, place, and the passage of time. She regularly collaborates with composer David Power, and sees drawing and painting as the mainstay of her work, which includes participatory projects, installation and film. A member of the Contemporary British Painting platform, she is also an associate member of the practice-based research organisation, Land2.
